Raja Azmi Raja Nazuddin, MAVCOM Chief Operating Officer Speaks at the Sarawak Transport Conference 2023

On 6 September 2023, the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) was represented by its Chief Operating Officer, Raja Azmi Raja Nazuddin as a guest speaker at the Sarawak Transport Conference 2023 hosted by the Ministry of Transport Sarawak in conjunction with the 10th Brunei Darussalam – Indonesia – Malaysia – Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Transport Cluster Meeting.

Raja Azmi provided insights on the topic of ‘Expanding Air Linkages to Enhance EAGA Regional Connectivity: Malaysia Perspective’ to the Ministry of Transport officials from the BIMP-EAGA countries, members of the business community, as well as university students. The theme of the conference was ‘Transport Sector Accelerating Tourism, Trade and Investment in the BIMP-EAGA Region’.

He elaborated that the biggest hurdle to boosting growth in trade, investments, and tourism in the subregion is the lack of air connectivity. Fortunately, there has been a marked recovery in the second quarter of 2023 and consequently, huge potential to grow international air travel and tourism in the BIMP-EAGA. Hence, regaining air connectivity is an essential step moving forward as it will encourage further expansion in aviation demand, creating a virtuous cycle of positive effects for economic growth.

Raja Azmi said, “East ASEAN Growth Area’s (BIMP-EAGA) vast potential can be unlocked by enhancing air connectivity through growth hubs, tourism partnerships, code-sharing, and airport infrastructure investments.”

Ministry of Transport Sarawak’s Permanent Secretary and Member of the Commission, Dato Ir. Alice Jawan Empaling also gave a talk on “From Vision to Reality: How Sarawak is Revolutionising Public Transport” to kick off the conference.

MAVCOM is grateful for this opportunity to engage the industry at large and would like to express its sincerest thanks to the Ministry of Transport Sarawak for inviting the Commission to participate in the conference. MAVCOM also looks forward to supporting future efforts in improving air travel and the economy by the industry and government, as well as hopes to participate in more similar
engagements in the near future.
